Sing Sankey
THE NEXT SING SANKEY is on 26th NOVEMBER 2011 when 80% of the proceeds will be donated to Julias House, the childrens Hospice
Ira David Sankey was an American gospel singerand composer, born 1840. As a young man he served in the Civil War as a soldier for the Union. After the war he worked for the Inland Revenue Service and the YMCA. He married in 1863 and had three sons.
It was at a YMCA convention in 1870 that he met evangelist Dwight L. Moody and shortly after attended his first evangelistic meeting with him.
In 1873 they made their first visit to the UK. While in Edingburgh they raised £10,000 to build a new home for the Carrubbers Close Mission, which still stands, and is used for its original purpose on the Royal Mile.
Sankey wrote many hymns and songs and arranged music for many more, and his collection of Sacred Songs and Solos is still in use.
He was blind from glaucoma for the last five years of his life. He died in 1908.

The first Sing Sankey in Bridport took place at the United Church in November 2009 and was organised by Clive Jeanes of Bridport Rotary Club.
The latest event took place on Saturday 27th November 2010 at the United Church, East Street, Bridport.
The evening was introduced by David Taylor and the programme was led by Harold Tompkins, the bandmaster of the Weymouth Salvation Army Citadel Band. The evening included performances by The Songsters and The Timbrels and a beautiful vocal solo by Tryphena Wilson.
The Charitable event raised around £1200 and this is to be distributed as follows:
40% Salvation Army, 40% Friends of Greenfields and Bridport Alzheimers Memory Cafe and 20% to various Rotary Charities.
